Pharma Marketing Asset Testing Options Compared: Traditional Research, Ad-Testing Platforms, Synthetic Start-ups, and HCP Panels

Pharma brand and insights teams testing messages, concepts, and ads usually choose between five types of options: traditional research firms, consumer ad-testing platforms, synthetic audience based start-ups, survey platforms with HCP panels, and data companies. Each is strong at one step of the work. Few cover the full path from a message idea to a tested asset in every channel. This guide compares message testing vendors for pharma by category, so you can match the option to the decision in front of you.
What to look for in a pharma marketing asset testing option
Many concept testing platforms and ad-testing tools are built for consumer brands. Pharma adds requirements that a general tool may not meet. Six criteria separate the options:
- Real HCP respondents. Can you field to verified physicians in the specialties you promote to?
- Pharma-relevant norms. Are results benchmarked against pharma and HCP messages, or against consumer ads?
- Choice-based methods. Does it support MaxDiff, conjoint, and trade-off exercises that show what HCPs choose?
- Channel, segment, and sequence. Can it test which claim works in which channel, for which specialty, in what order?
- Continuous message evolution. Can you keep testing messages as they evolve after the initial study, so every change is backed by data?
- Time to results. Does the answer arrive while the production window is still open?
Pharma message testing options at a glance
|
Option |
Best at |
Where it stops for pharma asset testing |
|
Traditional research firms |
Pharma credibility and established norm databases |
A full messaging study typically takes 8 to 12 weeks and produces one channel-agnostic ranked list |
|
Consumer ad-testing platforms |
Fast, low-cost ad pre-tests with large norm bases |
Norms and panels are built around consumers, not HCP messages |
|
Synthetic audience start-ups |
Fast, unlimited simulated reactions |
The read is only as strong as the real data behind it, but lacks the ability to check it against real HCPs in one flow |
|
Survey platforms and HCP panels |
Quick survey build and access to large HCP audiences |
They solve how to field; the brand team still decides what to test and what it means |
|
Data companies and consultancies |
Deep prescription, claims, and market data |
They show what happened in market, not what to say next and how to test it |
The five options, one by one
1. Traditional pharma market research firms
Examples include Ipsos and Kantar. These are long-standing names in pharma market research, and their strengths are real: pharma experience, rigorous methods, and years of norm data. The limit is cadence. A typical messaging study takes 8 to 12 weeks and returns a single ranked list. Testing a channel version, a segment version, or a new sequence means another study, so most of those questions go untested. We cover that problem in detail in why a messaging blueprint has an activation gap.
2. Consumer ad-testing platforms
Examples include System1, which tests ads with real consumers and reports results in as little as 24 hours against a database of more than 120,000 ads, and Kantar's LINK AI, which delivers AI predictions in minutes from a base of more than 300,000 ad tests. For ad pretesting at consumer scale, they are fast and well benchmarked. For pharma, the question is fit: consumer norms measure emotional pull and brand metrics, while a brand team promoting to oncologists needs to know which claim to lead with, for which specialty, in which order.
3. Synthetic audience and digital twin start-ups
Examples include Simile, which builds AI simulations of human behaviour, and Swoop's Piper, which combines claims data, patient voice, and synthetic audiences. Synthetic audiences are useful for early exploration and fast iteration. Two questions decide whether a synthetic read can support a pharma decision: what real HCP research it is built on, and whether it can be checked against real HCPs from the same source. Our guide to synthetic audiences vs real HCPs covers when each one fits.
4. Survey platforms and HCP panels
Examples include Sermo, a physician community that runs HCP surveys through its RealTime platform, and Konovo, which launched an AI survey-design tool, Survey Studio, in late 2025. These options make it fast to build a survey and reach large HCP audiences. They answer how to field. What to test, how to design the exercise, and what the results mean still sit with the brand team or another research partner.
5. Data companies and consultancies
Examples include IQVIA, known for prescription and claims data. Data companies show what happened in market: prescribing, share, and uptake. That is essential for measuring results, and ZoomRx's own promotional effectiveness tracking, digital and TV media tracking and pharma messaging benchmarks sit in this space. In-market data explains the outcome of a campaign. Pre-testing decides which version of the campaign goes out.
Where Marketing Asset Testing (MAT) fits
Marketing Asset Testing (MAT) by ZoomRx is an AI-powered application for pharma message and marketing asset testing, built on Sagan Agents. It replaces long studies with turnkey, cost-effective, iterative tests and was designed to bring every step together:
- Synthetic and real HCPs in one place: iterate with synthetic audiences built on the brand's own research, then confirm with real HCPs from ZoomRx's 65K+ proprietary panel.
- Choice-based methods: MaxDiff, conjoint, pairwise, flash-recall, and scroll tests.
- The steps after the ranking: customize winning messages to channels, personalize them to segments, put them in sequence, and test each version.
- Timing: studies typically take 1 to 2 days to set up and 5 to 7 days to field, with next-day results.
MAT has limits worth knowing. It is currently available for the US market. Messages are benchmarked against a norm base, while other asset types are ranked within the set tested. Results show relative performance and do not forecast prescriptions, share, or sales.
How to choose the right option for the decision
- A large, high-stakes messaging study with a long runway: a market research firm with a proven traditional research approach.
- A consumer-facing ad that needs a quick emotional read: a consumer ad-testing platform fits.
- A survey you have already designed and need fielded to HCPs fast: a survey platform or HCP panel fits.
- Understanding what happened after launch: use in-market data and tracking.
- Large and small decisions across channels and segments, tested with real HCPs and refined in between: look for an option that combines synthetic iteration, real HCP validation, and choice-based methods in one workflow.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between message testing and concept testing in pharma?
Message testing evaluates the words: which claims, benefits, or statements HCPs find most compelling, believable, and relevant. Concept testing evaluates a broader idea, usually a visual and headline together, such as a campaign concept or ad concept. Brand teams often run concept testing first to pick a creative direction, then message testing to decide what the chosen concept should say.
Can consumer ad-testing tools be used for HCP-facing pharma ads?
They can give a fast read on attention and emotional response, but their norms come from consumer ads and consumer respondents. For HCP banner ads, what matters is how physicians in the target specialty react to the claim, the data, and if it stands out or grabs attention. Our digital tracker shows the competitor banners physicians are already seeing, so you can spot the gaps and make your creative stand out.
What should a pharma brand team include in a message testing RFP?
Ask each vendor about HCP sample source and verification, the methods offered (MaxDiff, conjoint, trade-offs), time from brief to results, whether channel and segment versions can be tested, how results are benchmarked, who reviews the study design, and what happens to the data after the study and if there is a way to get more out of the study if messages evolve.
Should a new testing platform replace our current research vendor?
Not necessarily. Many brand teams keep their incumbent for large strategic studies and add a faster option for the channel, segment, and creative decisions that come up between them. Once a PMR or messaging study is done, messages keep evolving, and you can keep testing and refining them, even if it’s a single message.
